  1. Jun 16,  · A grudging reissue rather goes through the motions Despite the swagger of the Manic Street Preachers debut Generation Terrorists and singles like ‘You Love Us’ and ‘Slash and Burn’, I only really switched on to the band with the brilliant ‘Motorcycle Emptiness’ near the end of that campaign. I was therefore keenly anticipating the follow-up and didn’t have to wait very long.
  2. Since the Manics are more intellectual and revolutionary than the Gunners, Gold Against the Soul burns with inspired, if confused, rhetoric. The Manics, however, aren't quite as gifted with hooks at this stage -- their power derives from their self-belief, which they can't quite translate into songs.
  3. Final track, the album title, Gold Against The Soul again explains itself in its title. It tells how gold/money corrupts and “erodes” the soul. Specifically, the song is a tirade against the major players in Thatcher-era Britain on both sides of the social spectrum. Far and away the album’s best track is Life Becoming A Landslide/5.
